Formula 1 News: Alonso Credits Aston Martin’s Understanding of Recent Issues for Improved Competitiveness
Fernando Alonso attributed Aston Martin’s impressive showing at the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix to the team’s newfound understanding of its recent problems. The Silverstone-based squad, which began the season strongly, had struggled to maintain its pace in recent rounds due to upgrades that failed to deliver the expected gains.
Alonso, who finished sixth, and teammate Lance Stroll, who came in seventh, capitalized on Ferrari’s dismal weekend to secure a double points finish for Aston Martin. “Yeah, fantastic, I think, race for the team, obviously, scoring with both cars is always the target and sixth and seventh is a good number of points,” Alonso expressed.
The two-time Formula 1 champion acknowledged the challenges posed by the Montreal circuit, stating, “Extremely difficult race with the conditions. Majority of the race, the track was just two meters wide. You cannot put a tyre outside of that dry line. So that is very, very stressful.”
However, Alonso revealed that Aston Martin’s return to form stemmed from the team’s ability to grasp its recent setbacks. “We are happier with the car now,” he said. “We understood a few things and I think we are more competitive.” But he cautioned that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve’s characteristics suited the AMR24 and predicted that the upcoming Barcelona race would be a true test of the team’s progress.
Aston Martin is also planning to accelerate the introduction of new components to reduce the growing gap to the top four. “But at the same time, we had in the calendar Montreal as one of the best tracks for us, for our package,” Alonso noted. “And yeah, question mark what is going to happen in Barcelona. But I know the team is working flat out to bring also new parts to the next race. And hopefully we keep this level of competitiveness.”
