WRC Introduces ‘Command Centre’ Concept to Boost Live Storytelling Capabilities
In a significant development aimed at enhancing the World Rally Championship’s (WRC) ability to convey unfolding stories to fans during events, the WRC Promoter has unveiled the ‘Command Centre’ concept. This innovation is part of the championship’s efforts to improve communication between teams, manufacturers, and fans, drawing inspiration from Formula 1’s live team radio model.
As the WRC continues to evolve, the promoter has been collaborating with teams and manufacturers to extract more data from the cars and facilitate live interaction between crews and teams. This cutting-edge technology is currently undergoing testing, with M-Sport set to conduct further evaluation in Estonia next week as part of their pre-event running before Rally Poland.
“We have tests going on with M-Sport at the evaluation centre and then at their test in Estonia coming up, so actual on-site testing. We have a number of technical partners working with us. We have [former Hyundai WRC boss] Andrea Adamo contracted with us to lead the project, so our plan is to test throughout this year but implement for Monte Carlo,” – Simon Larkin, WRC event director.
The Command Centre concept may eventually manifest as a physical structure in the service park, housing team representatives during rallies. However, its primary function is to create a robust and engaging storytelling technology that will elevate the WRC fan experience. “It is a name of a concept. It may well end up being a building or a physical structure but what we want to do is to create a roll-out robust useable interesting storytelling technology for Monte Carlo,” Larkin clarified.
In addition to the Command Centre, the WRC is also working with helmet manufacturer Stilo to introduce helmet cameras, providing a unique driver’s eye view of the championship’s most challenging roads. This innovation is expected to further enhance the WRC’s storytelling capabilities, giving fans an immersive experience like never before.
