Mercedes Anticipates Stern Test in Spanish Grand Prix to Validate Recent Progress
As the Formula 1 calendar shifts to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix, Mercedes is bracing for a critical evaluation of its recent progress with the 2024 car. Following a sluggish start to the season, the team’s fortunes changed in Canada, where it secured pole position and a third-place finish with George Russell.
Mercedes Technical Director James Allison remains cautious about assessing the team’s inroads, insisting that the true test of their upgrades will come at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The diverse cornering speed ranges and hot track conditions will provide a stern examination of the W15’s capabilities.
“We have broadened the operating range of the car substantially,” Allison said. “There is more we still need to do, and we will know for sure when we go to the next track, which is Barcelona, because there is really a very substantial range of cornering conditions. There is also a much hotter track, and so that will be quite a stern test of a vehicle.”
Allison also highlighted the importance of getting the tyres in the correct working window, particularly in light of Lewis Hamilton’s continued struggles in one-lap qualifying.
“Drivers have a very difficult job to do on an out lap,” he explained. “They have to manage the out lap of the qualifying before their flying lap, such that they bring the front tyres and the rear tyres into their window, while also respecting the minimum times that the race director has imposed on them.”
The Mercedes Technical Director emphasized that even small mistakes can have significant consequences in Formula 1.
“It does not take much by way of being a degree here, cold here or there, to just take the edge off them. And then they launch into the first corners. If the car is not as well prepared as it might be, then the tyres will just slip a little bit on the surface. That will make them overheat on the surface, and you lose a bit of grip, and then it will just run away from you.”
With the Formula 1 standings still tightly contested, Mercedes is aware that every small advantage counts. As the team prepares for the Spanish Grand Prix, it will be keen to validate its recent progress and demonstrate its ability to consistently compete at the sharp end of the Formula 1 grid.
