Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 Revival: A Weekend to Remember in Montreal

The Australian Formula 1 driver, Daniel Ricciardo, has revealed that he entered the Canadian Grand Prix with a “chip on his shoulder” as he produced his strongest performance of the season to date. This weekend’s results have finally given Ricciardo’s fans something to cheer about after a disappointing campaign, which saw his RB team-mate Yuki Tsunoda outperform him.

However, Ricciardo silenced his critics, including ex-F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve, as he demonstrated his competitive edge from the start of the weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He qualified an impressive fifth and went on to secure an eighth-place finish despite a clutch issue that resulted in a five-second penalty for a start infraction and challenging weather conditions.

“It’s the first weekend I’ve got well, start to finish.” – Daniel Ricciardo

Speaking to Speedcafe, Ricciardo expressed his relief at finally piecing together a complete weekend, saying, “It’s the first weekend I’ve got well, start to finish.” He acknowledged that his fourth-place finish in the Sprint in Miami was followed by a disappointing Q1 elimination, but this weekend’s result has given him a much-needed confidence boost.

Ricciardo has pinpointed the added intent and intensity he brought into the Canadian Grand Prix as a key factor in his success. He believes this mindset is essential to translate into upcoming races, stating, “I think that little energy, a little bit of a chip on my shoulder I brought into the weekend, I’ve got to make sure that stays there and just keep that level of intensity.”

The eight-time grand prix winner’s impressive performance has extended RB’s advantage over Haas in the battle for sixth in the Constructors’ Championship to 21 points. His four-point haul has also gained him two spots in the Drivers’ standings, moving him up to 12th. Although he still trails Tsunoda by 10 points, Ricciardo’s revival has given him hope for the rest of the season.

As the Formula 1 calendar moves on to the Spanish Grand Prix, Ricciardo will return to the track where he secured his maiden F1 podium in 2014. With his newfound confidence and intensity, the Australian driver will be looking to continue his upward trend and bridge the gap with his team-mate.
