Fresh from his impressive podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, George Russell has conceded that the upcoming Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix will be a “real test” for the improved Mercedes team. Russell’s third-place finish at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve marked his and Mercedes’ first podium result of the 2024 season, building on his pole position achievement.
Although Russell’s off-track excursions hindered his chances of converting pole into a win in Canada, the upgraded W15 showed significant improvement. Now, attention turns to Barcelona, a traditional benchmark for Formula 1 performance. Russell believes that if Mercedes can perform well in Spain, it bodes well for their prospects moving forward.
“I think this is going to be a real test that if we can be fast this weekend, that bodes really well for the season,” Russell said in a recent interview. “After a number of difficult tracks, which are always really fun to drive, Monaco, Montreal, some of the best tracks, Imola – It’s going to be good coming back to Barcelona, Austria, Silverstone, more conventional circuits.”
Russell emphasized that the team’s pace at the Spanish Grand Prix will provide a clearer indication of their progress. “Seeing where the pace of this car really works out, I think ourselves, McLaren and Ferrari have made some big strides towards Red Bull this season, but we also know that they had challenging races in the bumpy tracks, so I think we’re all sat here with anticipation of what if.”
With his best weekend of the year in Canada, Russell expressed confidence in his current form. “I’m feeling really good, to be honest. In a good place with myself, the car.” He added, “I think there’s no reason why we can’t be competitive again.” However, the question of Red Bull’s pace remains a mystery, one that Mercedes and its rivals need to unravel.
Red Bull has openly admitted to faltering in recent rounds, but Max Verstappen has still managed to win two of the last three races. Russell acknowledged that Red Bull’s pace is still a concern. “Of course, if a team says this was a very difficult race and they still win, they’ve got more in their pockets.”
As the Formula 1 calendar moves to the Spanish Grand Prix, all eyes will be on Red Bull’s performance. Will they regain their dominance, and by how much? Russell remains cautious, stating, “We’re making really good steps forward at the moment. We think we have more things to come in the future races. But for this weekend, we have to wait and see.”
