Red Bull Unveils Spanish Grand Prix Upgrade Package to Boost Aerodynamic Efficiency in Formula 1

As the Formula 1 calendar shifts to the European phase, Red Bull has taken a significant step towards maximizing the aerodynamic efficiency of its RB20 car, particularly for warmer Formula 1 races. The team has introduced a comprehensive package of tweaks aimed at optimizing its car’s performance, with a focus on ensuring that the cooling characteristics, especially air through the sidepods, are maximized to maintain downforce and efficiency.

According to the official FIA submission documents ahead of the Barcelona weekend, Red Bull outlined five key changes made to its car. These include:

    • New sidepod inlet geometries that have been revised based on simulation results to exploit higher pressure inlet air for greatest cooling efficiency, allowing the team to run the least number of exit louvre openings.
    • New engine cover side panels to match the new sidepod inlet profiles.
    • Floor alterations to accommodate the engine cover and sidepod inlet changes.
    • Beam wing elements that have been extruded into a revised endplate geometry to exploit available air pressure and offer more local load.

Red Bull’s sister team, RB, has also brought a substantial development package to Barcelona, aimed at closing the gap on the cars ahead. While some modifications are minor, such as reverting brake ducts back to more normal openings after the unique requirements for Monaco and Montreal, there are also some extensive revisions elsewhere. The engine cover top and lower surfaces, as well as sidepods, have been reprofiled to improve airflow to the rear of the car and the floor edge. The leading edge of the sidepods have also been reprofiled to suit the new bodywork, while the height and shape of the forward floor have been updated, along with modified fences. Furthermore, RB is introducing a new rear wing aimed for medium and high downforce tracks, as well as a modified beam wing with less camber and incidence employed.

“With the battle for the top spot in the Formula 1 calendar intensifying, Red Bull’s comprehensive upgrade package is poised to play a crucial role in the team’s performance in the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix.”

As the season heats up, Formula 1 fans can expect an thrilling showdown between the top teams, with Red Bull’s RB20 car looking sharper than ever. Stay tuned for the latest Formula 1 news and updates, including Formula 1 tyres and Formula 1 calendar developments.
