Formula 1 Today: Norris Tops the Timesheet in Opening Spanish GP Practice

The Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix got underway with an exciting opening practice session, where McLaren’s Lando Norris set the fastest time. On soft tyres, Norris clocked a scorching 1:14.228, edging out reigning World Champion Max Verstappen by a mere 0.024 seconds. Verstappen, who claimed his maiden win at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2016, leads the championship by 56 points heading into the weekend.

Ferrari and Mercedes in the Mix

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz began his home race on a strong note, finishing third, three-tenths off Norris’ pace, on medium tyres. George Russell and Sergio Perez followed, with Russell using the yellow-banded compound for his timed lap. Oscar Piastri rounded out the top six, also on soft tyres.

Meanwhile, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton finished seventh, while Esteban Ocon provided a promising start for Alpine, taking eighth spot. Fernando Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, clocked ninth, despite causing the only notable incident of the session when he ran wide at Turn 9. A minor part of his AMR24 detached, prompting a brief suspension of running to clear the track. Alonso was able to continue his programme without issue.

Williams and Sauber in the Mix

Alex Albon rounded out the top 10 for Williams, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas. Ollie Bearman, a Ferrari Driver Academy member, returned to Haas’ VF-24 for his second practice run, finishing 19th, two-tenths behind Haas team-mate Kevin Magnussen.

“As the Formula 1 news unfolds, all eyes are on the drivers’ tyre strategies, with the soft, medium, and hard compounds all seeing action in the opening practice session. The Spanish GP is shaping up to be a thrilling event, with Norris currently leading the Formula 1 standings.”
