Verstappen Attributes Converging Grid to Restrictive F1 Regulations
In a recent interview, Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen attributed the converging grid in the 2024 Formula 1 season to the current regulations being too restrictive. The Dutch driver believes that the lack of creative freedom in the current ruleset has led to teams replicating Red Bull’s concept, ultimately closing the gap between competitors.
Verstappen’s remarks come after Red Bull’s dominant streak since the introduction of ground effect cars in 2022. Last season, he clinched an unprecedented 19 wins from 22 races, with Red Bull securing the constructor’s championship. However, this season has seen other teams closing in on the defending champions. McLaren, in particular, has emerged as a consistent contender, with Lando Norris securing a win in Miami and showing strong performances in Imola and Canada.
“I think it’s more that these regulations, they don’t really offer many different directions. With the older spec cars, like the 21 regulations, there was a lot more that you could do, and here I think it’s almost like you reach a kind of a ceiling, bit easier than the other cars.”
The three-time Formula 1 champion believes that the current rules limit the scope for innovation and creativity, making it easier for teams to replicate each other’s designs.
“Some people are quite good at analysing everything that we do, and sometimes you see some similar things, but that’s normal. I would do the same, if I would be behind, you look at the best team and you try to learn from what they’re doing.”
Verstappen’s comments come ahead of the Formula 1 season’s mid-point, with the championship battle heating up. As the competition continues to intensify, the Dutch driver acknowledges that he will need to raise his game each weekend to retain his advantage.
“I think those races that maybe you’re a bit more under pressure, so you have to drive closer to 100% all the time, I think that’s normal. I mean, I’ve done that also in the past. But it’s natural when teams are getting closer to you. Some races last year, you didn’t need to go at 100%. It’s how it is.”
As the Formula 1 season enters its second half, Verstappen’s remarks highlight the importance of adaptability and innovation in the face of increasingly restrictive regulations. With the Formula 1 standings still up for grabs, fans can expect an exciting battle for the championship in the remaining races.
