Lola Cars Extends Formula E Commitment to 2030, Eyes Broader Electric Racing Ambitions
In a significant development, Lola Cars has confirmed its extended involvement in the Formula E championship, committing to the all-electric series until at least 2030. This news comes after the British brand’s initial announcement in March to return to motorsport as a powertrain supplier in Formula E, starting with the 2024-25 season.
The iconic brand, synonymous with motorsport since 1958, has found success in various categories, including IndyCar, Le Mans 24 Hours, Formula 1, Can-Am, and Formula 3000. Despite facing administration in 2012, Lola Cars was revived in 2022 by British businessman Till Bechtolsheimer, who acquired the Lola name and remaining assets with the aim of reviving the brand’s motorsport presence.
Formula E Partnership with Yamaha
As part of its Formula E return, Lola Cars will partner with Yamaha, the Japanese manufacturer making its own comeback to four-wheel racing since 1997. While Yamaha has yet to formally confirm its commitment beyond the Gen3 Evo era in 2025-26, Lola Cars’ extended involvement provides a significant boost to the championship.
“We feel the opportunity for innovation in this series will only increase as the performance of the cars and technology develops, giving greater scope to develop innovative technologies across global motorsport and in the broader zero emissions transportation space,” said Mark Preston, Lola Cars’ motorsport director.
Lola Cars and Yamaha will begin testing with the Gen3 Evo machine this month, preparing to supply a powertrain to the Abt team. Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds welcomed the news, stating, “With their historic return to top-tier motorsport for Season 11 next year, we’re delighted that Lola Cars will also be committing to the GEN4 era โ promising their presence will be on the Formula E grid until at least 2030.”
Formula E’s commitment to electric racing and innovation has attracted significant attention, with Lola Cars’ trust in the series underscoring its ability to draw in major names in motorsport. As the championship continues to grow, fans can expect thrilling developments, including Lola Cars’ highly anticipated return to the track in the 2024-25 season.
