Lewis Hamilton Unwavering in Ferrari Move Despite Mercedes’ Recent Progress in Formula 1
Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton remains resolute in his decision to join Ferrari next season, despite Mercedes’ recent surge in performance. Hamilton, who activated an exit clause in his Mercedes deal before the season began, is set to partner Charles Leclerc at Ferrari in 2025.
The Briton’s decision seemed justified earlier in the campaign as Ferrari challenged Red Bull and Mercedes struggled with an inconsistent W15 machine. However, Mercedes has since overcome its issues, securing podiums in the last two races, while Ferrari has appeared to slip down the pecking order with updates.
“No, not at all,” Hamilton, who finished third in Spain, responded when asked if he was having second thoughts about his decision amid the two teams’ contrasting fortunes.
The 38-year-old emphasized his affection for Mercedes, saying, “I love Mercedes. I’ve been with Mercedes since I was 13, and I’ll always be a fan and a supporter of Mercedes.”
Hamilton acknowledged that his primary focus is to work with his current team to improve the car and secure better results. “My job this year is to work as hard as I can with the crew that I have, the people back at the factory, to try and move and develop the car in the right direction,” he explained.
Regarding his move to Ferrari, Hamilton expressed confidence in the Italian team, saying, “I think they’ve had a couple of difficult races, but let’s not forget they had a race win in Monaco.” He also acknowledged that Ferrari has brought an upgrade to the Spanish Grand Prix and is “definitely progressing.”
Hamilton’s podium finish in Barcelona was his 198th in Formula 1, but he has not secured a win since December 2021. When questioned about the importance of ending his Mercedes stint with a record-extending win, Hamilton replied, “It’s not that it’d be nice… Considering where we’ve come from, I think yeah, just having consistency and seeing if we can put the team further up in the points, I think would be the target.”
The Formula 1 driver emphasized the need for Mercedes to make further progress to battle the top teams. “We are yet currently in a position to be able to fight for wins. You would say that maybe Montreal, I mean, George probably should have won that one, but if I’d qualified where I feel I should have, yeah, there’s potential also there too,” Hamilton stated.
Looking ahead to the upcoming races, Hamilton hopes Mercedes can “eke a little bit closer” to the top teams, citing the importance of bringing upgrades and improving the car. “There’s a clear improvement, and there’s just clear areas where we need to bolt on performance so that we can be in the fight again.”
