Mercedes Focused on Improving Car, No Talks with Max Verstappen for 2025

Mercedes Formula 1 team principal Toto Wolff has quashed rumors of talks with Max Verstappen over a potential switch to the team in 2025, stating that their focus remains on improving their car’s pace.

The recent speculation surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s possible exit to Ferrari has led to a vacant drive at Mercedes for next season. Wolff had previously expressed interest in prying Verstappen away from Red Bull, but the Dutch driver has reaffirmed his commitment to seeing out his contract through 2028.

When asked about rumors that Mercedes protege Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is eligible to drive in F1 before turning 18, has been promised the vacant seat, Wolff denied any decision had been made. “No, no driver decision has been made. I said we want to keep this decision as long as possible because who knows what will happen,” he said.

    Verstappen’s Impressive Performance

Verstappen’s impressive performance in the Spanish Grand Prix, where he overhauled George Russell’s Mercedes on the third lap to take the win, has done little to deter Wolff’s hope that the Dutchman could be persuaded to leave Red Bull in the future. However, Wolff acknowledges that Mercedes’ priority must be on improving their car’s performance.

“We just need to continue to improve and look at ourselves,” Wolff conceded. “The most important thing is as a team with our drivers, Lewis and George, we’ve just got to get better and hopefully consolidate our ability to be on the podium. And at a certain stage be able to win races on our own. And if you have a good car, good drivers will want to come.”

Despite rumors of a lucrative proposal being tabled to Verstappen, Wolff is adamant that no talks have taken place. “No, there’s no talks taking place at that stage, because I think we need to look at ourselves and on improving the car.”

    Mercedes’ Focus on Improving Performance

Verstappen’s impressive wins in the past two races, despite Red Bull not having the fastest car, have demonstrated his ability to make a difference. Wolff credits the reigning champion as a key factor in his team’s success. “I think the McLaren looked very quick… I think that Max always has a little bit in the pocket and can make the difference.”

As the Formula 1 calendar unfolds, Mercedes’ focus on improving their car’s performance will be crucial in their bid to close the gap with Red Bull and McLaren. With the Formula 1 standings still tightly contested, Wolff’s team will be looking to capitalize on their recent progress and secure a win in the coming races.
