Red Bull Advisor Hints at Liam Lawson Replacing Daniel Ricciardo in 2025 Formula 1 Season
In a recent interview with Kleine Zeitung, Red Bull Formula 1 advisor Helmut Marko dropped a hint that Liam Lawson could be in line to replace Daniel Ricciardo at the team in 2025. This move would be driven by the shareholders’ desire to integrate a “young driver” into the lineup.
Marko’s comments come on the heels of Red Bull’s announcement that Yuki Tsunoda will remain with the team next season, ensuring that either Ricciardo or Lawson will miss out on a drive. While Ricciardo currently occupies the seat, his inconsistent results have raised questions about his future with the team.
“The shareholders have made it known that it is a junior team and we have to act accordingly,” Marko stated. “The goal was that he would be considered for Red Bull Racing with exceptional performances. That seat now belongs to Sergio Perez, so that plan is no longer valid.”
Marko emphasized the need to bring in fresh talent, saying, “We have to put a young driver in there soon. That would be Liam Lawson.” Lawson has already had a taste of Formula 1, deputizing for Ricciardo at five rounds last season and completing several outings.
While Ricciardo has been linked to a move to Sauber, he expressed his desire to stay with Red Bull next season after a solid run to eighth in the Canadian Grand Prix. “Well, I mean, Canada obviously helps,” he said. “As I said, I needed a result like that. Obviously, I would like to stay.”
Ricciardo acknowledged that his future is far from certain, saying, “I obviously want to earn it. Like I don’t just want it to be like, ‘Yeah. Yeah. OK. Stay another year’.” He added, “I obviously want to be here because I know that I still belong here and can do performances like I did last week [in Canada]. So it’s also up to me just to make sure that I can keep pulling it out.”
As the Formula 1 season unfolds, attention will be focused on Ricciardo’s performance and whether he can do enough to secure his spot at Red Bull for 2025. In the meantime, Marko’s comments have certainly thrown Lawson’s name into the mix as a potential replacement.
