Lando Norris Confident McLaren Can Dethrone Verstappen and Red Bull

In an exclusive interview, Lando Norris expressed his confidence that McLaren has what it takes to dethrone Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing from the top of the Formula 1 standings, but emphasized the need to “eliminate small mistakes” to bridge the 69-point gap.

Norris’ optimism stems from McLaren’s consistent performance since introducing upgrades in Miami, which helped him secure a maiden win. The MCL38 has proven to be a reliable challenger to Red Bull’s dominance, but errors have cost the team dearly in Canada and Spain.

“I think we should have done better today. We should have gotten some points back on Max,” Norris emphasized.

Reflecting on the recent races, Norris acknowledged that strategic mistakes and a poor start in Barcelona had denied him victory. Despite moving into second place in the Drivers’ Championship, he is under no illusions about the task at hand.

When asked if a championship tilt is realistic this season, Norris replied, “I think so… But Max needs to stop winning to achieve that.” He stressed that every small detail counts, pointing out that Verstappen has not made any mistakes, and that McLaren’s objective is to “put it all together.”

Norris reiterated that Red Bull’s speed advantage lies in minimizing errors, and that McLaren must up its game to stay competitive. Looking ahead to the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, where he secured his maiden Formula 1 podium in 2021, Norris expressed confidence in McLaren’s ability to compete. However, he concurred with team boss Andrea Stella that more speed is needed in high-speed corners to match Red Bull.

With only a few tenths separating the top teams, Norris acknowledged that unlocking additional speed will be crucial. “We’re always there or thereabouts within a couple of tenths of pole, and that’s all we can ask for. I think we need to bring something a little bit more just to make our life a bit easier.”

As the Formula 1 season reaches its midpoint, Norris is gearing up for a thrilling battle. Can McLaren overcome its small mistakes to upset the reigning champions? The forthcoming races will provide the answer.
