Formula 1 News: Verstappen Takes Sprint Race Pole Position at Austrian GP

Max Verstappen secured the sprint race pole position at the Red Bull Ring, beating Lando Norris by a mere 0.093s in the thrilling sprint qualifying session on Saturday, June 29, 2024. This puts Verstappen in an advantageous position for the Austrian GP, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK.

In a surprising twist, Charles Leclerc was hampered by an anti-stall issue with his Ferrari, preventing him from setting a single lap time in the final qualifying segment. As a result, he’ll start the sprint race in 10th position, a setback for the Ferrari team.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Alpine duo Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly got entangled trying to start their final qualifying laps, which ultimately led to them ruining each other’s times. Perez will start in 7th, Ocon in 8th, and Gasly in 9th. The sprint race will begin at 12:00pm local time (11:00am BST) and will consist of 24 laps or 60 minutes.

“For fans in the UK, Sky Sports will provide live coverage of the sprint race starting at 10:00am BST on Sky Sports F1. Meanwhile, grand prix qualifying will be broadcast at 2:00pm BST. If you prefer highlights, Channel 4 will air a 90-minute program at 6:30pm BST, covering both the sprint race and grand prix qualifying. You can also catch up with the highlights on Channel 4‘s on-demand services.”

Radio enthusiasts can tune into BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC 5 Live Sports Extra, or the BBC Sport website for live coverage of every practice, qualifying, and race of the 2024 F1 season.

With dry and sunny conditions forecasted for Saturday, temperatures are expected to reach highs of 27 degrees Celsius at the start of the sprint race and 30 degrees Celsius at the start of grand prix qualifying.
