Rosberg’s Philanthropies Tackles Environmental Impact of British Grand Prix
As the Formula 1 calendar gears up for the British Grand Prix, retired world champion Nico Rosberg is shifting his focus to advanced sustainability in motorsport. Through Rosberg’s Philanthropies, he has teamed up with Oxford University, Formula 1, and the Silverstone Circuit to tackle the environmental impact of racing.
With around 470,000 visitors expected to flock to Silverstone over the four-day event, Rosberg’s project is zeroing in on two critical areas: fan travel and biodiversity. The former Formula 1 driver, who won at Silverstone in 2013, acknowledges that fan travel is a significant contributor to the carbon footprint of the British Grand Prix.
“Fan travel is a big problem for the British Grand Prix with the amount of fans joining,” Rosberg told Autosport. “It’s close to half a million people, and most people arrive with their cars, so definitely, it’s a good case study.”
To mitigate this issue, the research project will utilize ANPR camera data, air quality monitors, satellite imagery from the European Space Agency, and data from the Silverstone ticketing app to provide recommendations for reducing the carbon impact of fan travel in future events.
The biodiversity aspect of the project will involve sampling and testing the ecosystem on the greenfield site, with results to be published later this year. Rosberg’s partnership with Silverstone has been instrumental in gaining access to the necessary data and resources for the project.
“We are working with Silverstone because we need access to the road cameras, to their quality air quality monitors, so we’re going to leverage that data there,” Rosberg explained. “We need access to the surroundings of the racetrack because we’re doing sample testing on the biodiversity index, so Silverstone have been very supportive.”
As a pioneer in Formula 1 sustainability, Rosberg’s project is breaking new ground in the sport.
“Nothing has been done like this before with Formula 1, it is groundbreaking, and everyone has this need to decarbonise their events, so this should work as a case study for their races globally,” he said.
With Formula 1 news often dominated by on-track action, Rosberg’s initiative serves as a timely reminder of the sport’s growing focus on sustainability. As the world of motorsport continues to evolve, projects like this one are crucial in reducing the environmental impact of racing and promoting a more sustainable future for Formula 1.
