Drivers Prepare for the Challenge of the Shanghai Circuit
This past Friday, Formula E drivers got their first taste of the Shanghai circuit, walking the track to visualize the layout and prepare for the challenge ahead. The sweltering heat of the afternoon didn’t deter the drivers from getting started, with Jean-Eric Vergne setting the pace early on, securing the third fastest time in the first session and finishing first in the second aboard his DS E-TENSE FE23.
Vergne Secures Pole Position, but Battle Looms
As the day progressed, the trend became clear: both DS Penske cars qualified for the quarter-finals, with Vergne taking pole position ahead of Oliver Rowland’s Nissan. “It’s great to be on pole here today,” Vergne said. “Qualifying wasn’t easy, it’s very slippery and you have to be very careful not to make any mistakes. So it was difficult, but I’m very happy. Now we have to concentrate on the race.“
The Unique Challenges of the Shanghai Circuit
The Shanghai circuit, in its Formula E format, presents a unique challenge, offering few opportunities for regeneration while demanding careful energy management. This delicate balance between energy strategy and pure performance requires experienced drivers and skilled engineers working in tandem to succeed.
Intense Race with Numerous Position Changes
With only 12 bends and 3 kilometers per lap, the race was always going to be intense. The activation of attack mode proved crucial, as drivers sought to stay close to the front while conserving energy. The field remained tight, with the top 12 drivers within five seconds of each other, leading to numerous position changes throughout the pack.
The Critical Final Laps
As the race reached its halfway point, each driver still had around 53-54% of their battery remaining. The engineers’ screens revealed that the final seven laps would be the most critical. The pace picked up, with drivers seeking the perfect moment to attack. Unfortunately, Vergne’s pole position was short-lived, as he fell victim to several touches and a badly damaged front wing, ultimately finishing in sixth position, while his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne secured ninth place.
