Formula 1 Today: Verstappen Loses 100 Downforce Points After Gravel Trap Incident

In a thrilling qualifying session for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix, Max Verstappen suffered a setback after his run across the Copse gravel trap in Q1, resulting in significant floor damage and a loss of 100 downforce points.

The Red Bull driver was pushing hard on slicks in the opening segment of qualifying, despite the threat of a rain shower. As he hit a damp patch at Copse, his RB20 pitched off the circuit and through the gravel. Although he managed to recover and make it through each segment, ultimately ending up fourth on the grid, his car had sustained substantial damage.

“Initially, it was 100 [points], which is a lot. We got it down a little bit, but it was a lot,” he explained.

While there is no direct correlation between downforce points and lap time, a general rule of thumb suggests that 10 points are equivalent to around 0.1 seconds. In Verstappen’s case, this could have translated to a loss of up to one second.

Verstappen attributed the incident to being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as the rain started to fall during Q1.

“Q1, that off was super unlucky. I came out of Turn 7 heading towards Copse and it started to rain. So, I knew that the people in front of me didn’t have that rain patch and, of course, they were on slicks.”

Despite the setback, Verstappen was relieved to have made it into Q3 and secured a fourth-place starting position.

“I was happy to be in Q3 with the damage that we had, and to be P4 is probably a bit of a positive surprise,” he said.

The Red Bull team worked tirelessly to repair the damaged floor, but Verstappen reported that the aero balance kept changing, making it challenging to find consistency throughout the qualifying session. His final Q3 lap, which secured his second-row starting position, was a testament to his determination and adaptability behind the wheel.

In Formula 1 qualifying, every second counts, and Verstappen’s performance, despite the damage, demonstrates his resilience and skill. With the race approaching, all eyes will be on the Red Bull driver as he bids to overcome his qualifying struggles and make a strong impression on the Formula 1 news headlines.
