Formula 1: Mercedes Locks Out Front Row at Silverstone as Russell Takes Pole

    Silverstone, UK – July 6, 2024

Mercedes’ resurgence continued at the British Grand Prix as George Russell took pole position ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton, with Lando Norris of McLaren securing third place. The Mercedes duo capitalised on the mixed conditions in qualifying to secure a front-row lockout, much to the delight of the Silverstone crowd.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” Russell said. “We didn’t expect to be on the front row this weekend, so it’s huge for us as a team. The car felt alive in qualifying, and it was an absolute joy to drive around this amazing circuit.”

Hamilton, who finished just 0.171s behind Russell, was equally thrilled with the team’s performance.

“Having three Brits at the front of the grid for the British Grand Prix is incredible. A huge congratulations to George, he did such a great job to take pole position. We didn’t expect to be on the front row this weekend, so it’s huge for us as a team.”

Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, praised the team’s hard work and determination.

“That was a very good Saturday for the team. That is a front three for Mercedes-Benz power, and three Brits at the front, which is special for the Silverstone crowd. We need to do the job tomorrow, and the McLaren of Lando Norris has looked incredibly quick.”

Norris was pleased with his third-place finish, despite making a mistake on his final lap.

“I’m happy with P3. Three Brits locking out the top three positions at the British Grand Prix is pretty cool. Both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton did great laps and an excellent job. I made a little mistake on my part at the end, but we’re still in a good starting spot.”

The Formula 1 calendar moves on to the next race, with the Mercedes pair looking to convert their front-row start into a victory. Will they be able to hold off Norris and the rest of the field? Only time will tell.
