Formula 1 News: Power Rankings Unveiled After Thrilling British Grand Prix
The 2023 British Grand Prix will go down in history as an eventful, historic, and emotional weekend, with Lewis Hamilton securing a record-breaking victory โ his first in 945 days โ at the iconic Silverstone circuit. The Mercedes driver fought off stiff competition from Lando Norris and Max Verstappen to claim the top step of the podium. But who else impressed in this thrilling race that had it all? Our Power Rankings scores are in, providing an expert analysis of each driver’s performance over the weekend.
How the Power Rankings Work
Our five-judge panel assesses each driver after every Grand Prix, scoring them out of 10 based on their performance across the weekend, with machinery taken out of the equation. The experts’ scores are then averaged out to produce a race score, which is tallied up across the season on our overall Power Rankings Leaderboard.
Top Performers
Max Verstappen’s second-place finish might not have been his usual dominant self, but it was still an accomplished race from both him and his Red Bull team. The Dutch driver praised his team’s strategy calls, which lifted him up the order after initially worrying about finishing as low as fifth or sixth. Our judges took note of Verstappen’s ability to maximize what was possible.
George Russell’s home race weekend was a mixed bag, securing a stunning pole position on Saturday but struggling during the race. The Mercedes driver enjoyed a good launch at the start and led teammate Lewis Hamilton initially, but lost the lead on Lap 18 and eventually retired due to a water system issue.
Welcome Return to Form
Lance Stroll’s seventh-place finish marked a welcome return to points-scoring form for Aston Martin, his third top-seven finish of the season. The Canadian beat his teammate Fernando Alonso by just over seven seconds in the race, earning recognition from our judges for a job well done.
Missing Out
Logan Sargeant’s 11th-placed result for Williams was unfortunate to miss out on the top 10, but it did lift him off the bottom of the drivers’ championship. Valtteri Bottas now occupies the unwanted spot at the bottom of the standings.
