Red Bull’s Formula 1 Dominance Under Threat: Can Verstappen Bail Them Out?
When Red Bull unveiled its RB20 for pre-season testing in Bahrain, many predicted a repeat of their 2023 dominance. However, four months later, the competitive landscape has changed dramatically. Mercedes has finally found its footing with a slew of upgrades, and McLaren has continued its impressive development trajectory.
Ferrari’s recent struggles with its latest upgrade package have seen the team take a step back, but it remains a force to be reckoned with at circuits that suit the SF24. The past seven grands prix have seen five different winners from four distinct teams, setting the stage for a thrilling second half of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
For Red Bull, though, the picture is less rosy. The team’s sizeable advantage from the start of the season has evaporated, leaving many to wonder where it all went wrong. According to traditional wisdom, teams naturally converge as regulations remain stable, and Red Bull simply has less performance to squeeze out of the current rulebook.

Rival squads who struggled in 2022 and 2023 are slowly finding the answers to Red Bull’s downforce and performance secrets, while the sliding scale of development time hinders Red Bull’s progress. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner concurred, stating, “It’s no secret that we have less development time than the others and we’re at the top of the curve, so you’re into diminishing returns.”
However, Max Verstappen is not one to accept the status quo, pushing his team to find gains rather than accepting their new reality. The question remains: how much more can Red Bull wring out of its 2024 car? With the summer shutdown approaching, teams will soon shift their focus to their 2025 cars.
Chief engineer Paul Monaghan explained that Red Bull is “potentially ‘asymptoteing’ a bit on these regulations,” finding smaller and smaller gains as their development curve flattens out. Horner is still hopeful that updates in the pipeline will make a difference, but admits that any gains are now down to the smallest details.
Verstappen’s Driving Prowess Could Be the Deciding Factor
Verstappen’s exceptional driving skills and Red Bull’s superior race execution might yet prove the deciding factor in the championship. Despite not having the fastest car, Verstappen has won three of the past seven races, outscoring his nearest challengers in all but one.
As the Formula 1 calendar approaches its midpoint, the battle for supremacy is far from over.
