Aston Martin’s Regression in Formula 1: Stroll Attributes Slump to Wrong Development Direction
Lance Stroll has pinpointed Aston Martin’s regression in the Formula 1 standings over the last 12 months to the team’s inability to maximize upgrades due to a wrong direction in development. The Silverstone-based squad, which emerged as Red Bull’s closest challenger in the opening rounds of the 2023 season, has since slipped down the championship order.
Aston Martin capitalized on other teams’ incorrect car philosophies last year, but its own development path has hindered its progress. Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes made mid-season concept changes, which allowed them to surpass Aston Martin. This season, the team has struggled to register a race result higher than fifth across the first 12 rounds, scoring 115 fewer points than at the same stage last year.
Stroll attributed Aston Martin’s downturn to a mistaken development philosophy, stating, “We went down the wrong path, and we’ve slowly been realizing that more and more.” The Canadian driver, who will remain with the team through 2026, expressed optimism that the harsh lessons learned will help Aston Martin come back stronger in the future.
“We’ve done a lot of exploring and a lot of aero testing over the last 12 months,” he said. “Every upgrade we’ve brought, we haven’t seen the benefit that we were hoping to see over the last year. I think we’ve learned a lot, and now we’re really just trying to execute, fix the problem, and make the car a lot faster.”
Despite the challenges, Stroll produced an encouraging race at Silverstone last weekend, finishing seventh and heading teammate Fernando Alonso in a double points finish. However, he confessed that the intermittent showers created an added challenge, making it difficult to relish the drive. “I was not confident, I was s****ing my pants,” Stroll reflected. “When it starts raining at such a high-speed track like this, the mixed conditions are so tough because you’ve got to really keep your foot in it, believe and commit to the corners.”
As the Formula 1 calendar unfolds, Aston Martin will aim to rectify its development path and regain its competitive edge. With Stroll’s commitment to the team until 2026, the Canadian driver will play a crucial role in helping Aston Martin overcome its current struggles and rise up the Formula 1 standings.
