Albon Remains Optimistic About Williams’ Progress Despite Challenges
In the midst of a challenging season, Williams’ Alex Albon remains optimistic about the team’s progress, despite their current position at the back of the grid. Speaking to Autosport at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Albon emphasized that the team’s struggles are not a reflection of their efforts, but rather a result of the significant changes they’ve made to their car’s DNA and team structure.
“We’re not where we want to be, but I think it’s a testament to the other teams as well,” Albon stated, highlighting the remarkable strides made by the midfield group. “We’ve made a good step, but relative to the others, maybe we’re holding back a little bit. The Haas has been the standout in the group.”
The Thai-British driver acknowledged the team’s overweight car at the start of the season, which hindered their performance. “It’s a real shame that at the start of the year, we were not on-weight where we should have been, because our car should have been in the points consistently for the first few races and then we would have shuffled down to where we are now.”
Albon’s sentiments align with those of team principal James Vowles, who has been under scrutiny for the team’s recent slump. However, Albon praised Vowles’ honesty and commitment to the team’s growth.
“I have been very much a part of the project. James has brought me into it. He’s very straight. He doesn’t tell you things are better than they actually are, and I like that.”
Vowles’ blueprint for Williams’ future involves making significant progress, but not expecting immediate results. Albon concurs, believing that it may take until 2027 for the team to challenge for wins again.
“If I am being totally honest, I don’t see us being in a position to fight for wins and titles for a while, but to do steps where we start nipping in and getting podiums and whatnot. I believe that 2026 would be difficult, but winning in ’27 would be much more realistic.”
Throughout the ups and downs, Albon remains encouraged by the team’s drive and motivation, citing their significant investment and aggressive recruitment as key factors in their eventual success. As the Formula 1 calendar continues, Williams Racing looks to the future, with Albon and Vowles working in tandem to return the team to the front of the grid. With the Formula 1 standings constantly shifting, Williams is focused on laying the foundations for a strong comeback.
