Formula 1 News: Mick Schumacher and Liam Lawson Emerge as Leading Contenders for Williams Seat
As the Italian Grand Prix approaches this weekend, Williams team boss James Vowles is considering his options for a potential driver change, with Mick Schumacher and Liam Lawson emerging as top contenders.
Vowles’ evaluation comes in the wake of another significant accident for Logan Sargeant at Zandvoort last weekend. Sargeant, who will be replaced by Carlos Sainz at the end of this year, made a mistake during the wet final free practice session, resulting in a high-speed spin into the barriers. The incident destroyed many of the latest upgrades brought to the Dutch GP weekend, triggering spare parts problems for the team.
“Logan Sargeant’s costly accident at Zandvoort has raised concerns about his ability to avoid incidents, with some viewing it as a potential last straw. Vowles has stated that the team needs to make a decision on what to do for the rest of the season, but doesn’t want to rush it while emotions are high.”
One logical option for Williams is Schumacher, who is currently the reserve driver for the Mercedes operation, whose engines the team uses. Vowles’ friendship with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff could make a deal straightforward. However, Schumacher’s WEC commitments for Alpine may pose a complication, as his scheduled races in Austin, Azerbaijan, and Brazil clash with the remaining Formula 1 grands prix.
Wolff has expressed support for Schumacher, stating, “I would very much hope that Mick gets the chance because we haven’t seen the real Mick. The opportunity with Williams is something that we would be cheering for.” Schumacher has prioritized any Formula 1 race chance over his sportscar efforts in the past.
Liam Lawson, Red Bull reserve driver, is another option for Williams. The New Zealander is expected to return to full-time Formula 1 competition in 2025, either with the RB squad or its sister Red Bull operation. An opportunity to see out the season for Williams would give Red Bull more time to evaluate the performances of Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo ahead of a decision about next year’s pairings.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has stated that if the deal was right for his team, he would be open to an arrangement with Williams, saying, “It would depend on which terms and if we needed him back that we could have him back quite quickly.”
As the Formula 1 season enters its final stretch, Vowles’ decision on a potential driver change for Williams will be closely watched. With the Italian Grand Prix just around the corner, Schumacher and Lawson are both in the running to take the wheel alongside Alexander Albon for the rest of the season.
