Formula 1 Shakeup: Niels Wittich Exits Race Director Role with Immediate Effect
The Formula 1 community was left reeling on Tuesday as the FIA announced that Niels Wittich, the governing body’s Formula 1 race director, has stepped down from his position with immediate effect. Wittich, who has been in the role since 2022, will pursue new opportunities ahead of the highly anticipated Las Vegas Grand Prix.
In a statement, the FIA expressed its gratitude to Wittich, praising his professionalism and dedication to the sport. > “Niels has fulfilled his numerous responsibilities as Race Director with professionalism and dedication. We thank him for his commitment and we wish him the best for the future,” the statement read.
Wittich’s departure marks a significant change in the Formula 1 landscape, as he had played a crucial role in shaping the sport’s on-track proceedings. His tenure as race director was not without controversy, however, with some questioning his decisions during certain races.
Filling the void left by Wittich will be Portugal’s Rui Marques, who brings a wealth of experience to the role. Marques has previously served as track marshal, scrutineer, national and international steward, Deputy Race Director, and Race Director in various championships. Most recently, he held the position of Formula 2 and Formula 3 Race Director.
Marques will assume the role of Race Director from the Las Vegas Grand Prix onwards, and his appointment is expected to bring a new level of stability and expertise to the sport. Wittich, meanwhile, will be remembered for his contributions to Formula 1, including his stint as a race director in the German DTM championship prior to joining the FIA.
