Breaking News: Doriane Pin Withdraws from 2023 Le Mans Due to Injuries, Rahel Frey to Step In
In an unfortunate turn of events, French driver Doriane Pin has announced her withdrawal from the highly anticipated 24 Hours of Le Mans, scheduled to take place on June 15-16. The decision comes on the heels of a recent incident at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit during a Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA) event, which left Pin with broken ribs.
Pin, who recently committed to the F1 Academy and FRECA, was initially slated to put her 2024 World Endurance Championship (WEC) engagements on hold, with the exception of the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours. However, following the FRECA incident, Pin has been forced to reassess her participation in the WEC 2023 calendar.
“After further medical checks, we found out that I have fractured ribs. Obviously, it means that I need time to heal, so we have made the difficult decision with the team not to race the 24 Hours of Le Mans or the FRECA races in Zandvoort.”
Pin’s withdrawal marks a significant setback for the young driver, who was particularly looking forward to competing at Le Mans, one of the most prestigious races on the WEC 2024 calendar.
“This decision is tough and sad, especially since Le Mans is one of the biggest races of the year and for me, it’s a very special one,” Pin expressed.
In Pin’s absence, Rahel Frey will take the reins, joining teammates Sarah Bovy and Michelle Gatting in the #85 Lamborghini Huracan LMGT3 EVO2 for the 92nd running of Le Mans. Frey, who has already notched four consecutive starts at Le Mans with the Iron Dames, will now enter her fifth appearance in pink, or seventh overall.
The Iron Dames trio, who secured their first WEC win at the Bahrain season finale last year, will continue their LMGT3 era campaign, vying for success in the highly competitive WEC 2023 season.
