IndyCar News: Malukas Cleared to Return to Racing with Meyer Shank Racing
After a lengthy recovery from a pre-season mountain bike accident that left him with a wrist injury, David Malukas has been declared fit to return to the cockpit. The 22-year-old American-Lithuanian racer will make his first IndyCar start of the 2024 season with Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) at the upcoming Monterey race on June 23.
Malukas’ injury, which required surgical repairs, forced him to miss the start of the season and ultimately led to the termination of his contract with Arrow McLaren in April. However, he has now been given a second chance with MSR, who are looking to bolster their position in the Leaders Circle standings.
“This whole process has been extremely difficult on myself and Jim Meyer,” said Mike Shank, MSR team owner. “We are pleased to have David join us as he has both experience and potential, and we are looking forward to having him join us starting in Milwaukee for the test and then going racing with him at Laguna.”
Malukas will take over the #66 Honda-powered entry from Helio Castroneves, who drove for the team at Detroit last weekend and will do so again at Road America. Tom Blomqvist, who started the season with MSR, was benched after the Indianapolis 500 and will return to sportscar competition with the team in the future.
“I am extremely grateful to Jim Meyer, Mike Shank, and the entire Meyer Shank Racing team for the opportunity to finish out the 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season,” said Malukas. “Despite setbacks earlier this year, I have been diligently focusing on my recovery, putting in the necessary effort and dedication to get back to peak condition. I am ready and excited to be back in the car, aiming to make the most of this chance and deliver strong performances for the team and our supporters.”
Malukas will get his first taste of action with MSR at a test in Milwaukee on June 11, before making his IndyCar return at Monterey two weeks later. With five points-paying rounds already completed this season, Malukas will be looking to make an immediate impact and help MSR climb the championship standings.
