Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll Downplays Points Gap to Teammate Fernando Alonso in Formula 1

As the Formula 1 season unfolds, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll has spoken out about the perceived gap between himself and teammate Fernando Alonso, citing that the points difference is “a little bit deceiving.” Alonso, a two-time World Champion, joined Aston Martin last season, replacing Sebastian Vettel, and has since dominated Stroll in terms of points and podium finishes. However, Stroll believes that external factors, such as engine failures, can significantly impact the points tally, making it an unfair comparison.

Speaking to The Canadian Press, Stroll highlighted that the head-to-head statistics are more telling, with a 4-4 split in qualifying. He emphasized that his recent performances have been strong, stating, “When I look at pace right now, and speed, like I said, four-four in quali. People say he’s super-good and I beat him the last few weekends, so take it as you want.

The Canadian driver also expressed his commitment to Aston Martin’s project, praising the team’s growth and progress. Despite struggling with an unpredictable AMR24 car, Stroll is optimistic about the future, stating, “We’re on a super exciting trajectory and project as Aston Martin… I’m much more excited to be part of this journey than just going to another team to say that I could be driving somewhere else.

Before his home race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Stroll reiterated his intention to remain with Aston Martin in 2025, although his contract has not been officially confirmed. “Yeah, that’s where my head’s at, for sure… Everything that’s happening at Silverstone and the project with the team and how we’ve grown over the last few years. And we continue to grow.

As the Formula 1 standings currently show Alonso ahead of Stroll, the Canadian driver is focused on closing the gap. With the Aston Martin team working to improve their car, Stroll is confident in his abilities and committed to the team’s mission. After all, in the world of Formula 1, one engine failure can change the course of the season, making Stroll’s points gap to Alonso a little less daunting.
