McLaren’s Lando Norris Rues Missed Opportunity in Formula 1 Today
Lando Norris, the British Formula 1 driver, is left reeling after a tactical blunder cost him a potential win in today’s Formula 1 race. Norris had overtaken both Max Verstappen and polesitter George Russell to take the lead, putting in impressive lap times to build up his advantage.
However, his progress was halted when the first safety car emerged after Logan Sargeant hit the wall on the exit of Turn 5. Norris claims that he had ample time to pit for fresh intermediates and maintain his lead, but the team opted to take an extra lap, relegating him to third behind Verstappen and Russell.
“We should have won the race today and we didn’t. So it’s frustrating. We had the pace, probably not in the dry at the end. It turned out that didn’t really matter too much, but we should have won today – simple as that.”
The McLaren driver emphasized that it wasn’t a matter of luck or bad fortune, but rather a wrong call made by the team. “It wasn’t the timing of the first safety car: I had enough time to box, and we didn’t box,” Norris explained.
In a surprising twist, Verstappen jokingly referred to the incident as “payback” for the Miami Grand Prix, where Norris capitalized on a safety car situation to snatch the lead and claim his first Formula 1 victory. Verstappen observed:
“Of course, it sometimes works for you and sometimes it works against you. So this time, it was working for us. I guess in that sense, it’s 1-1 now this year! But that’s racing, it’s a part of it as well.”
