Fernando Alonso: Aston Martin Can Match Formula 1 Elite Despite Current Struggles

Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso has emphasized that it is unfair to compare Aston Martin to top-tier teams like Ferrari and Mercedes, considering the British marque’s relatively short history in the sport. Alonso’s statement comes amidst Aston Martin’s current struggles in the 2024 Formula 1 season, where the team has regressed towards the midfield contenders despite initial promise.

Alonso, who joined Aston Martin last term, acknowledged the team’s remarkable progress, noting that they have grown from a 300-person outfit to nearly 900 employees under a new name. He believes this growth spurt should not be overlooked when comparing them to established powerhouse teams.

“We cannot forget that two years ago we were a team of 300 people, now we are almost 900 under another name,” Alonso told DAZN. “It is a little unfair that we compare ourselves with Ferrari or Mercedes, very established teams with continuity for many years.”

The Spanish driver, who signed a multi-term contract renewal with Aston Martin, is confident that the team can eventually match the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes. He cited the team’s state-of-the-art headquarters at Silverstone and the upcoming wind tunnel as key factors in their growth.

“I think this team and this project has all the ingredients to be successful,” Alonso stated. “We have the new campus, the wind tunnel at the end of the year, great sponsors, the car company behind it with the leadership of Lawrence Stroll. It is an iconic brand in the history of motorsports. You have to put all the pieces together.”

Aston Martin has been linked to high-profile engineers, including outgoing Red Bull design guru Adrian Newey and Ferrari Technical Director Enrico Cardile. Alonso hinted that more recruits could be on the horizon, highlighting the team’s attractiveness to top talent.

“We logically want to improve, I also think that people from outside see in this project something very interesting for the future,” Alonso expressed. “I believe that several of the names that are trying to join Aston Martin is a good sign that the team is attractive.”

Alonso reiterated that the team’s focus remains on short-term improvement, aiming to get their car competitive as soon as possible. However, he also emphasized the importance of long-term planning, with the 2026 regulation reset providing an opportunity for Aston Martin to make a significant leap.

“By 2026, especially with the new rules, we have a chance,” Alonso said. “The same or even better than the rest.”

With Alonso at the helm and the team’s infrastructure rapidly developing, Aston Martin is well-positioned to become a force to be reckoned with in the Formula 1 calendar. As the 2024 season unfolds, fans will be eagerly watching to see if the Silverstone-based outfit can translate their ambition into tangible results.
