Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix: Antonelli Makes Debut in FP1, Colapinto Replaces Sargeant at Williams

The Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix got underway with an exciting start as young driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli made his debut in the first practice session (FP1) with Mercedes. Meanwhile, Franco Colapinto replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams for the remainder of the season.

Antonelli, widely tipped to replace Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton next year, got off to a flying start before losing control at the Parabolica and crashing into the wall with a heavy 45G impact, bringing out the red flags. The incident delayed George Russell’s participation in the second session, which was led by Hamilton with a marginal 0.003-second advantage over McLaren driver Lando Norris.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has pledged his support to the 18-year-old Antonelli and announced plans for him to return for FP1 in Mexico. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen topped FP1, but struggled in the second session, finishing 14th, with teammate Sergio Perez in 15th. McLaren and Ferrari showed a strong performance across the day, with their combined four drivers completing the top five behind Hamilton.
