Formula 1 Driver Zhou Guanyu Enjoys Geely’s Backing, Boosting Future Prospects
In a significant development, Formula 1 driver Zhou Guanyu has revealed that he enjoys the backing of Chinese automotive giant Geely, a relationship that could potentially secure his spot in the Formula 1 calendar for the upcoming seasons. The 24-year-old Chinese driver is currently contracted with Sauber until the end of the season, but the Hinwil-based team is reportedly exploring other options for 2025, including a possible partnership with Nico Hulkenberg.
However, Geely’s involvement in the automotive industry, particularly its partnership with the Renault Group, could provide Zhou with a lifeline in Formula 1. Geely and Renault have co-founded HORSE, an automotive powertrains division, which could lead to opportunities for Zhou in the future.
“All I can say is that, for myself, personally, I’ve been already working together with Geely Group. I’ve been an ambassador for their cars, Zeekr is from their group, so I’m very close with them.”

Zhou, who has struggled for form this season, scoring zero points and making only one Q2 qualifying appearance in the first 10 rounds, emphasized Geely’s interest in Formula 1, saying, “Of course, they still have a high interest around motorsports, on Formula 1 in general. I think anywhere I’m heading, they will try to help me in that side, which is nice to have.”
Although Geely’s partnership with Alpine in the road car segment does not guarantee Zhou a spot in the team, it could increase his chances if Geely’s interest in Formula 1 grows and rumors of an Alpine sale come to fruition. Notably, Zhou has a prior connection with the Enstone outfit, having been a Renault Academy Driver during his Formula 2 days.
For now, Zhou remains focused on exploring all options for his Formula 1 future, stating, “I’m talking to all the options and trying to figure out what is the best together.” His primary objective remains to secure a spot on the grid for next season, with the driver acknowledging that “nothing has been confirmed” yet.
As the Formula 1 season progresses, Zhou’s future in the sport remains uncertain, but with Geely’s backing, he may have an edge in the highly competitive world of Formula 1. With the Formula 1 standings tightly contested, Zhou will be hoping to turn his season around and make a strong case for his retention in the sport.
