Alpine Confirms Jack Doohan to Replace Esteban Ocon in FP1 at Canadian Grand Prix

In a significant development ahead of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, Alpine has confirmed that reserve driver Jack Doohan will take the wheel of the A524 car during the opening practice hour, replacing Esteban Ocon. This move marks a crucial milestone for Doohan, who has been serving as Alpine’s reserve since 2023 and has already tasted Formula 1 action in FP1 sessions in Mexico and Abu Dhabi last season, as well as the annual post-season test.

“In Canada, we have decided to use the first mandatory young driver Free Practice 1, with Jack Doohan in the car in place of Esteban. With Jack’s great work in the simulator in recent races, we can count on his valuable feedback in Montreal,” said Alpine boss Bruno Famin.

As per the current FIA rules, each full-time race driver must surrender one FP1 session to provide a rookie driver with limited Grand Prix experience an opportunity to shine. Alpine will fulfill the first of its two requirements in 2024 at the iconic Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, giving Doohan the chance to get familiar with the team’s 2024 machinery early in the season.

Doohan, the son of motorcycle legend Mick Doohan, is considered a strong contender to replace the departing Ocon at the Enstone-based squad in 2025. Doohan echoed Famin’s sentiments, stating:

“Really excited to get out on track in Montréal for FP1. It will be my first time driving at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, which I am looking forward to. I am grateful to the team for the opportunity to get more track time, and also familiarise myself with 2024 machinery early in the season. This will also help with the work I am doing in the simulator, particularly at the European rounds.”

With a focus on maximizing the session for both drivers, Doohan aims to provide valuable insights on certain test items and understanding the new track surface. His performance will be closely watched, particularly given his potential to become a full-time driver in 2025. Stay tuned for updates on the Formula 1 schedule and Formula 1 calendar, as the Canadian Grand Prix gets underway this weekend.
