Formula 1 Engineering Scholarship: A Gateway to Diversity and Inclusion in the F1 Industry
As part of Formula 1’s drive to build a more diverse and inclusive sport, the Formula 1 Engineering Scholarship has emerged as a key scheme to break down barriers and provide opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Launched in 2021, the scholarship offers crucial financial, academic, and career support to students while providing an unparalleled insight into the Formula 1 industry.
One of the scholars on the programme is Sean Mata, an F1 Engineering Scholar at the University of Oxford since 2021. Sean’s journey began when he received an email about applying for the programme before starting his degree. He admits that the decision to apply was an “obvious” one, given the benefits of the scholarship, including engineering placement and funding for tuition fees.
When Sean found out about being awarded the scholarship, he was “ecstatic” and described it as a “life-changing opportunity.” As part of the programme, Sean undertook a summer placement with the Haas F1 team, where he worked with two key departments – the test and inspection function, and the Research and Development area.
“I think it is very important to offer these kinds of opportunities to underrepresented groups, because of the historical precedent that has occurred leading to underrepresentation of certain people within the engineering community,” he explains.
Sean’s projects included developing an automation system for the testing of the stiffness of a component called the T-tray and modelling how one of the components from the car works. His contributions were well-received by the team, including Head of Performance Engineering Dominic Haines, who has spoken positively about Sean’s work.
The F1 Engineering Scholarship has already supported 30 students from partner universities across the UK and Italy, with a further 20 students set to receive the scholarship over the course of 2024 and 2025. The programme enters its fourth year, with a significant impact on the industry.
The scholarship has been a game-changer for Sean, who is now contemplating his next steps following his placement. He is considering applying to study for a master’s degree and exploring his future career path beyond his studies, including a full-time role in F1.
Sean’s advice to eligible students considering applying for the F1 Engineering Scholarship is to “not be afraid” and to “do the best job you can.” He emphasizes the importance of being invested in one’s project and colleagues, which can lead to success in the programme.
