Alpine Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Concept Car for Endurance Racing

In a significant development for the future of endurance racing, Alpine has unveiled the Alpenglow Hy4, a 340 bhp concept car powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder internal combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen. This innovative prototype, first showcased at the 2022 Paris Motor Show, is set to take part in demonstration runs at the upcoming Le Mans 24 Hours next month.

Exploring Alternative Fuel Sources for Endurance Racing

The WEC 2023 season may be in full swing, but Alpine’s eyes are already on the 2027 Le Mans 24 Hours, where a new hydrogen class is expected to debut. The French manufacturer is actively exploring alternative fuel sources to reduce carbon emissions, and the Alpenglow Hy4 represents a crucial step in this direction.

“We see the hydrogen internal combustion engine as an extremely promising solution for decarbonising motorsports,” said Bruno Famin, Alpine Motorsports vice president. “Hydrogen will be an essential step in decarbonising the next generations of Endurance cars, and could also be for Formula 1 cars, particularly by switching to liquid storage for greater compactness and performance.”

    Impressive Performance and Motorsport Heritage

The Alpenglow Hy4 boasts impressive performance credentials, with a top speed of approximately 270 km/h, comparable to its petrol-powered counterparts. Built around an LMP3 carbon chassis supplied by Ligier, the car features a sequential racing gearbox and bespoke tyres produced by Michelin. Styling elements, including the front splitter and rear diffuser, have been optimized for greater aerodynamic efficiency.

Notably, the Alpenglow Hy4’s design takes cues from Alpine’s A424 LMDh, which competes in the WEC’s Hypercar category. “Ever since the creation of the Alpine Alpenglow concept car presented in Paris in 2022, we have looked forward to fulfilling the promise made with such a unique object: taking it out on the track,” said Antony Villain, Alpine Design Director.

Shaping the Future of Endurance Racing

The FIA WEC has been at the forefront of sustainable racing initiatives, and Alpine’s foray into hydrogen fuel technology is a welcome development. As the sport continues to evolve, innovations like the Alpenglow Hy4 will play a crucial role in shaping the future of endurance racing. With a second rolling version featuring a new V6 engine set to be unveiled later this year, Alpine is certainly making a strong statement about its commitment to a more sustainable WEC 2024 season and beyond.
