Esteban Ocon Slams Alpine’s Handling of Team Order Debacle at Canadian Grand Prix

In the aftermath of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon has expressed his disappointment with Alpine’s handling of the team order controversy that overshadowed the team’s double points score. Ocon, who initially ignored the instruction to let Pierre Gasly pass, eventually ceded eighth place between Turns 7 and 8 on the penultimate lap. However, Gasly was too far behind Daniel Ricciardo to catch up and improve Alpine’s standing.

Ocon believes he earned the right to have Gasly return the place once it was clear he couldn’t pass Ricciardo. “> I’m happy for the team to score with both cars, but the order should be reversed on that occasion,” Ocon stated. The French driver emphasized his commitment to being a team player, but felt that the team failed to reciprocate on this occasion.

When asked if he suspected the team’s actions were influenced by his impending departure, Ocon responded diplomatically, saying “We’ll let the benefit of the doubt.” Alpine, however, attributed the decision to a suspected power unit issue affecting Ocon’s performance, which prompted the team to give Gasly a chance to attack Ricciardo for eighth place.

The team’s justification notwithstanding, Ocon remained upbeat about his drive in Montreal, which saw him rise from 18th on the grid to take his second points finish this season. He is confident that his performance will not harm his prospects with potential suitors for 2025 and is optimistic about pushing the car to its maximum potential for the rest of the year.
