Extreme H Unveils Pioneer 25: The Future of Sustainable Motorsport with Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology
A New Era of Sustainable Racing
In a historic moment for the motorsport community, Extreme H has officially launched the Pioneer 25 at Tower Bridge in London, UK, marking a significant milestone in the championship’s transition to hydrogen fuel cell technology in 2025. This innovative move makes Extreme H the first motorsport series to adopt this eco-friendly technology, setting a new standard for sustainable racing.
The launch took place on board the championship’s St. Helena ship, which transported the cars, equipment, and infrastructure to the iconic Tower Bridge location on the River Thames, alongside the HMS Belfast. Since its inception in 2018, Extreme E has been dedicated to raising awareness about climate-related issues by visiting specially affected locations worldwide, boasting the lowest carbon footprint among all FIA series since its inaugural season in 2021.
“We are incredibly proud to introduce the world to the first hydrogen racing car and the Extreme H series… Fans can expect the same excitement with faster and more intense racing on track, but this launch is not just about a new vehicle; it’s about pioneering the future of sustainable motorsport.” – Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Extreme H
Hydrogen Fuel Cells: The Future of Motorsport
For the 2025 season and beyond, Extreme H will pioneer the use of hydrogen fuel cell technologies, becoming the first FIA-certified championship to do so. This move comes ahead of endurance racing’s planned adoption of hydrogen technology at Le Mans in 2027, solidifying its appeal in the motorsport world.
“Venturing into hydrogen is a really exciting prospect for our series… It is all about pioneering new paths into sustainable mobility and this championship is unique in the sense that it puts the latest technology to the test in the toughest environments in the world.” – Carlos Sainz, co-founder of ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team
Pioneer 25: A Significant Upgrade
The Pioneer 25 boasts no compromises, featuring an all-new chassis and purpose-built racing car designed for hydrogen fuel cell technology. According to Mark Grain, Technical Director at Extreme E, “The Pioneer 25 is a significant upgrade on the ODYSSEY 21… Overall performance of the car has taken a big step forward.” Grain emphasized the importance of demonstrating that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can be exciting, rugged, and robust, building on Extreme E’s success in showcasing EVs in harsh environments.
Public Demonstration and 2025 Teams
A public demonstration of the Pioneer 25 is scheduled for Extreme E’s next event, the Hydro X Prix in Scotland on July 13-14. The 2025 teams are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, marking an exciting new chapter for Extreme H.
