Formula 1 News: Monza Alterations Leave Drivers Underwhelmed

As the Formula 1 calendar moves to Monza, Italy, for the upcoming Grand Prix, a host of drivers have expressed their disapproval of the recent changes made to the iconic “old school” track.

Daniel Ricciardo, who took an early stroll around the revised circuit on Thursday morning, voiced his disappointment at the altered kerb profiles and installations. “They’ve changed the kerbs… I think some elements have lost some of the character of the circuit,” Ricciardo lamented.

The Australian driver emphasized the importance of kerbs in making a circuit unique, citing the second chicane as an example. He believes the new, flatter kerbs will make the racing easier but less characteristic of Monza’s “old schoolness.”

Ricciardo’s teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, shared similar sentiments, stating that the track now feels smoother and flatter, potentially losing some of its character. Haas driver Kevin Magnussen also expressed concern, hoping the changes wouldn’t detract from the track’s historic charm.

Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, reserved judgment, opting to wait until he takes to the track in FP1. “I don’t want to judge it before I’ve driven it… maybe we will get in and it will be the greatest thing and the greatest changes ever,” Hamilton said.

Friday’s two practice sessions will be crucial in determining the impact of the changes on the racing. Williams’ Alex Albon echoed the concerns of his fellow drivers, stating that the new kerbs may have made the track too generic.

The significance of understanding the revisions was highlighted by Aston Martin’s decision to reverse their plan to run reserve driver Felipe Drugovich in FP1. Instead, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will participate in the session to gain early experience with the updated track.

As the Formula 1 community continues to adjust to the revised Monza circuit, one thing is clear: the drivers are eager to get behind the wheel and experience the changes firsthand. Stay tuned for the latest Formula 1 news and updates from the Italian Grand Prix.
