Formula 1 Power Rankings: Russell’s Austrian Victory Overshadowed by Verstappen-Norris Showdown
Last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring was a thriller, with George Russell claiming Mercedes’ first win since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. However, it was the intense battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris that stole the show. Our Formula 1 Power Rankings judges have weighed in on the performances of the drivers, and the results are in.
Our expert panel assesses each driver after every Grand Prix, scoring them out of 10 based on their performance across the weekend, with machinery taken out of the equation. The scores are then averaged out to produce a race score, which is tallied up across the season on our overall Power Rankings Leaderboard.
Lando Norris Tops Judges’ Scores
Lando Norris topped our judges’ scores, despite a disappointing end to his race. The McLaren driver was in contention for his second career Grand Prix victory until a clash with Verstappen on Lap 64 took them both out of the running. Although Verstappen would eventually finish fifth, Norris’s car was too damaged to continue. His bravery in taking the fight to Verstappen earned him high praise from our judges, with a score of 8.6.
Oscar Piastri Disappoints with Second-Place Finish
Oscar Piastri, who scored his fourth F1 podium at the Red Bull Ring, was left disappointed with his second-placed finish. Had there been a few more laps, he might have caught Russell ahead. Our judges rewarded the 23-year-old with a score of 8.4 for a weekend that also saw him take P2 in the Sprint.
Hamilton Scores 7.4 Despite Challenging Race
Lewis Hamilton, who just missed the podium in Austria, took eighth place in our Power Rankings. It was a challenging race for the Mercedes man, who had to contend with damage and a five-second penalty for crossing the pit entry line. Despite labeling his performance as “pretty shocking,” he still managed to gain worthwhile points for the Silver Arrows, earning a score of 7.4.
Verstappen Scores Season-Low 6.0
Missing out on the top-10 performers were Charles Leclerc, Alex Albon, and Yuki Tsunoda, who were all tied on a score of 6.2. Verstappen, who looked favourites for the win in Austria for much of the weekend, scored a season-low 6.0, behind them.
