Formula 1 News: FIA Updates Superlicence Regulations, Paving Way for 17-Year-Old Drivers
In a significant update to the Formula 1 calendar, the FIA has revised Appendix L of its International Sporting Code to introduce a new clause that allows 17-year-old drivers to receive a superlicence under exceptional circumstances. FIA Grants Discretion for Superlicence Issuance
According to Article 13.1.2 of Appendix L, the FIA now has the discretion to grant a superlicence to drivers who have “recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition” at the age of 17. This change also applies to the requirements for a free practice-only superlicence, opening the door for Antonelli to participate in FP1 sessions prior to his 18th birthday on August 25.

The Italian driver, who has been supported by Mercedes since his karting days, has made rapid progress through the single-seater championships. While rumors had circulated that Antonelli was being considered to replace Logan Sargeant mid-season, Mercedes team principal James Vowles has denied these claims.
