Renowned Technical Officer Adrian Newey’s Future in Formula 1 Revealed (June 10, 2023, ESPN)

The question on everyone’s mind in the Formula 1 paddock is: what’s next for Adrian Newey? The two-time defending constructors’ champions, Red Bull, announced that Newey would leave the team in early 2025. With multiple options open to him should he decide to stay in Formula One, Formula 1 news outlets are speculating about his next move.

To many, a dream move to Ferrari seems like the best option, although Williams has emerged as a candidate, while the likes of Aston Martin, McLaren, and Mercedes have been rumoured as potential destinations. Newey’s intentions are not fully known, but he appears happy to take his time before making a decision.

Should the 65-year-old opt against retirement, he will have no shortage of options available to him in the Formula 1 paddock. Which team would suit him best, and which would set the stage for a page-turning chapter in his storybook F1 career?

    The strongest option: Ferrari

A move to Ferrari would immediately tick off another bucket list item for Newey: working with Lewis Hamilton, whom he has expressed regret at not building a car for in the past. Newey would oversee car design for Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, a driver pairing as strong as you could wish for in Formula 1 news. Additionally, Newey would have the opportunity to work with Ferrari’s world-renowned road cars, including the likes of the Ferrari road car side, which would provide an incredible incentive for Ferrari to include in any offer they might make.

    Outside bets: Williams, McLaren

Williams has emerged as a left-field option for Newey, with team boss James Vowles expressing interest in bringing the designer back to the team he first won a championship with in the early 1990s. McLaren, another team Newey has previously enjoyed championship success with, remains an outside bet, especially after CEO Zak Brown and Newey raced together at the Monaco Classic in May. Multiple sources have told ESPN that Williams is serious about bringing Newey back, making it a long shot while Ferrari remains in play.

What about Aston Martin or Mercedes?

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll wants Newey to join his F1 team, but the former has turned down at least one offer according to reports. Mercedes, on the other hand, appears to be a team in dire need of someone like Newey, someone who could steady the ship and inject some much-needed inspiration into its F1 project. However, the paddock chatter around Mercedes being in play for Newey has been almost nonexistent. Only time will tell what the future holds for Adrian Newey in Formula One.
