Formula 1 and the Sprint Race Calendar for 2025 Unveiled, Spa-Francorchamps Returns

The highly anticipated Formula 1 sprint race calendar for 2025 has been announced, featuring six grand prix weekends that will host the thrilling Saturday races. In a surprise move, Spa-Francorchamps is back on the calendar, while Austria drops off for the first time since 2021.

Five of the events on the sprint calendar remain unchanged from the 2024 schedule, with China, Miami, Austin, Brazil, and Qatar all set to host Saturday races again. The Belgian Grand Prix, which previously held a sprint race in 2023, returns to the calendar, replacing the Austrian Grand Prix, which had been a staple since 2022.

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix, known for its highly acclaimed shorter races, will continue to host a sprint race, having done so since the format’s introduction in 2021.

Both Qatar and the United States Grand Prix, introduced to the sprint calendar in 2023, will remain on the bill for both this season and next.

Formula 1 has also revealed a significant increase in viewing figures for sprint weekends compared to ‘normal’ weekends featuring three practice sessions, justifying the decision to continue with the format. The current layout, where the sprint race takes place on Saturday prior to grand prix qualifying, is expected to remain in place.

The changes made to the format in 2024, allowing parc ferme to open between the sprint race and qualifying proper, have proven successful in making the sprints more of a standalone event. This ensures that teams can address any mistakes in set-up to account for the loss in practice time, without penalising drivers for set-up changes between the sprint race and the grand prix.

The revised 2025 calendar means that the China and Miami sprints will no longer be consecutive weekends, while the three sprint rounds following the summer break are more spaced out.
