Haas F1 Recruitment Drive “Never Seen Before” in Formula 1 History
Ayao Komatsu, team principal of Haas F1, has revealed that the American outfit is currently undergoing a recruitment drive unparalleled in its Formula 1 history, courtesy of convincing owner Gene Haas and his key lieutenant to provide fresh investment.
Komatsu took the reins at the start of 2024, following Gene Haas’ surprise decision to axe former team boss Guenther Steiner. Haas had finished last in the 2023 constructors’ championship, prompting Haas to withhold further capital until the team showed improvement with its existing resources, a stance that frustrated Steiner.
“We demonstrated we can improve performance,” Komatsu told Autosport in an exclusive interview. “Then what we needed to convince the owner was that performance. He’s always looking at how we can get better, how can we go quicker?”
The new recruits are yet to join the team, but Komatsu credits the improved morale and positivity within the team, fostered by the collaborative atmosphere, for elevating performance.
Komatsu praises the “massive” impact of enlisting Haas Automation CEO Bob Murray, Gene Haas’ right-hand man, to the team’s Banbury base, winter testing, and several races. By showcasing what was possible with existing resources, Komatsu made the case that increased investment would yield further successes.

Ayao Komatsu on Strategies for Success in Formula 1
Komatsu attributes his strategy’s success to involving Gene Haas and Bob Murray in the process, aiming to educate them on what is required to succeed in Formula 1 and aligning their expectations accordingly. “The previous strategy might have been the opposite,” Komatsu noted, “…but my strategy from day one is [making] the owner understand the reality…it takes to be successful in Formula 1.”
With Bob Murray onboard, Komatsu believes, “it just goes to the show from Gene and Bob, our parent company, there’s commitment… [They] are backing it up by [their] actions. I’m really grateful about that.”
Haas’ commitment to growth and improvement reflects well on the team’s prospects in the years to come, as it embarks on this unprecedented recruitment drive aimed at propelling it further up the Formula 1 standings.
