Formula 1 News: Lewis Hamilton Fumes over Wasted Pole Opportunity at Italian Grand Prix Qualifying
Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton expressed his utter frustration with himself after failing to secure pole position during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix, leaving him sixth on the grid. The Mercedes driver was just 0.186s behind McLaren’s Lando Norris, who took his fifth career pole, but Hamilton’s mistakes cost him a potential front-row start.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Hamilton said, “Oh, I’m furious. Absolutely furious, because I could have been on pole. I think I could have been at least on the front row, and I just didn’t do the job at the end.” He attributed his poor result to losing time in Turns 1 and 2, as well as the final corner.
In an interview with the print media, Hamilton reiterated his disappointment, saying, “Just absolutely ridiculous from my side, completely unacceptable. And this is totally me, nobody else.” His self-criticism comes after outqualifying teammate George Russell in the last two races before the summer break, only to fall behind again in the Netherlands and Italy.
“Qualifying has been my weakness for a minute now and I can’t figure it out, so I’ll keep trying.”
Despite his frustration, he remains optimistic about the team’s chances, saying, “We have a good race car. The team has done an amazing job this weekend.”
However, Hamilton recognizes that overtaking will be challenging at Monza, and getting past the Ferraris to contend for a podium will be tough. “Tomorrow I’ve just got to try and recover as much as I can, and see if I can get past the Ferraris and try challenging to get a podium,” he said.
