Formula 1 Today: Lando Norris Reveals How He Channels Pressure into Positive Performance
McLaren’s Lando Norris, a rising star in Formula 1, has opened up about the immense pressure he faces while racing at the front of the grid. Despite admitting to still struggling with nerves, Norris has found a way to turn that pressure into a driving force behind his success, which includes two wins this season and a shot at the Formula 1 championship title.
Speaking ahead of the Italian Grand Prix weekend, Norris made a candid admission about the impact of pressure on his daily routine. “I barely eat anything on Sundays, I struggle to drink anything on Sundays, just because of nerves and just because of pressure,” he confessed. However, Norris emphasized that he has learned to harness this pressure to fuel his performance.
Norris explained that he still gets nervous before qualifying and races, but he has developed a coping mechanism to turn those nerves into a positive force. “I think it’s just about how you turn that into a positive thing, you know? How do you not let it affect you in a bad way, and how can you actually use it in in a good way, to help you focus on the correct things?”
Handling Pressure Through Experience
The British driver attributes his ability to manage pressure to his struggles during his early years in Formula 1. “Because I struggled a lot with this when I started in Formula 1, I feel like I learned pretty well how to handle it,” he said. “And that’s also helped me even in the position that I am now, when I’m maybe not directly in the championship fight neck and neck with Max, but just dealing with more questions and the pressure of having to deliver every single weekend.”
Norris’s ability to handle pressure has been instrumental in his rise to the top of the Formula 1 standings. He currently sits as an outside title contender, going head-to-head with incumbent Max Verstappen. Despite the added pressure, Norris remains comfortable in his ability to perform, saying, “I’m comfortable that I just have to go out and drive, and that’s all I can do, really not think about these external things. In the place I am now, fighting for wins and fighting in the championship, honestly, I feel like it’s another weekend.”
