Damon Hill: Lando Norris Silences Critics with First Formula 1 Victory in Miami

As the Formula 1 world gears up for this weekend’s British Grand Prix, 1996 world champion Damon Hill has praised Lando Norris for proving his doubters wrong with his maiden Formula 1 victory in Miami. The McLaren driver achieved this milestone in his 110th attempt, quieting a vocal minority who questioned his credentials.

In the races that followed, Norris showcased his consistent form with close second-place finishes in Imola, Montreal, and Barcelona, before an unfortunate retirement at the Austrian Grand Prix due to contact with Red Bull rival Max Verstappen while battling for the lead.

Hill believes that Norris needed to silence his critics, who were quick to point out his lack of wins. “Lando was keen to silence his critics, who wanted to make an issue of him not having won,” Hill stated. “In today’s social media age, criticism is ever-present, and it’s crucial not to let it define you. He responded to that, and now they can’t argue with his achievement.

Hill acknowledged that Norris still faces stiff competition, citing the difficulty of winning a Grand Prix, especially against top drivers like Max Verstappen. He drew parallels with tennis, saying, “You can be an exceptional player like Andy Murray, but you still need to overcome the likes of [Roger Federer], [Rafael Nadal], or [Novak Djokovic] to reach the top.

Meanwhile, George Russell benefited from the clash between Norris and Verstappen to secure a surprise victory for Mercedes at the Red Bull Ring, his second career win following his maiden victory at the 2022 Brazilian GP.

Hill emphasized that both Norris and Russell possess the talent to deliver a championship, but they must be prepared for the intense pressure that comes with fighting for world titles. “It takes a lot out of you, even if you’re the very best,” Hill said, recalling Michael Schumacher’s tears of joy after equalling Juan-Manuel Fangio’s record with his fifth world title in 2002.

To mount a serious title challenge, Hill believes that Norris and Russell need a car capable of competing with the top teams. “Lando might have a car good enough now, but he’ll need more to reduce the deficit to Max and stop Verstappen’s winning streak. That’s the only way to turn this into a close championship,” Hill concluded.

This Saturday, Hill will be participating in the Etape of the Tour de France, raising awareness and funds for Neuro UK. Fans can support his charity effort on the Neuro UK fundraising page.
