Renowned F1 Designer Adrian Newey Weighs Next Move Amid Speculation
Renowned Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey, who has overseen Red Bull’s technical operations as Chief Technical Officer, has revealed that this winter marks the latest he intends to decide on his next destination within the Formula 1 calendar. This news comes two months after Red Bull confirmed Newey’s desire to conclude his nearly two-decade involvement with the team.
Newey, widely regarded as Formula 1’s most successful designer with an impressive 25 championships under his belt, has hinted that he plans to continue his career in the sport beyond his Red Bull tenure. The Briton has been linked with a potential move to Ferrari, with rumors suggesting a verbal agreement on a ‘Super Consultant’ role. However, Aston Martin has also been courting Newey’s prized signature, with reports emerging that he was given a private tour of the team’s Silverstone headquarters.
“I don’t know,” he stated. “At the moment, I’m just kind of still working on the RB17 [Red Bull hypercar], and then just taking some time off.”
Newey has been keeping a low profile, recently taking a seven-day break to enjoy the South Coast with his dogs in an old Aston Martin DB6. The timing of his break couldn’t have been better, with the weather cooperating perfectly.
Aston Martin Courting Newey’s Expertise
Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has been tightlipped about Newey potentially joining the team, saying he was “flattered” that Aston Martin was being mentioned alongside Ferrari in the hunt for Newey’s services. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll, son of owner Lawrence Stroll, expressed his enthusiasm about the prospect of having Newey on board, calling it “f**king awesome.” “He’s the GOAT,” Stroll said. “I mean, he’s got more championships than anyone in this paddock, so he’s someone that everyone would love to have in their team colors.”
Aston Martin emerged as Red Bull’s closest challenger in the early stages of last season but struggled to maintain its competitiveness as the development race intensified. Despite this, the Silverstone-based squad has continued to work behind the scenes to transform into a title challenger, announcing the appointment of ex-Mercedes boss Andy Cowell as CEO from October. Additionally, reports in the Italian media suggest that Lawrence Stroll has successfully signed Ferrari Technical Director Enrico Cardile to join Aston Martin.
As the Formula 1 standings continue to take shape, all eyes will be on Newey’s next move and how it could impact the sport. Will he opt for Ferrari’s ‘Super Consultant’ role or join Aston Martin’s bid to become a title contender? Only time will tell.
