Max Verstappen Raises Concerns Over Technical Issue That Halted His Running in FP2 at Canadian Grand Prix
As the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix gets underway, Max Verstappen has expressed concerns that the technical issue which cut short his running in FP2 could have far-reaching “implications” for the rest of the season. The Dutchman was among the top five runners in the opening practice session, posting a lap on slicks as the track conditions dried up. However, his involvement in the second practice hour was curtailed with only four laps completed when he was forced back to the pits.
Verstappen reported a strange smell of smoke coming from his RB20 car, prompting Red Bull to investigate and later reveal an Energy Recovery System issue as the root cause. Having taken on several new power unit components, Verstappen, who ended FP2 in 18th place, acknowledged that the problem could have repercussions later in the season.
“There was a suspected electrical issue, so they told me to box and they’re investigating now,” Verstappen recalled. “I haven’t been back in the garage yet, but I’m sure soon we’ll figure out what it is.” He added, “It’s not ideal. I would have liked to drive more laps. Some other people had a few more laps in the dry, a few more laps now in the wet. It’s definitely not how I would have liked to get on in FP2.”
Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez, who finished 10th overall in the latter section, conceded that the conditions provided an inconclusive reading. However, with more showers forecasted for the weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the Mexican emphasized the importance of nailing the timing throughout qualifying.
“I think it was overall a very tricky day with the conditions that we had,” Perez expressed. “I think it’s going to be very important tomorrow to be out there at the right time. We could see that already it was changing quite a bit if you were not pushing on the right lap, it could be quite a difference.”
As the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix enters its qualifying stage, the spotlight will be on Verstappen and Red Bull to overcome their technical issues and secure a strong starting position. With the unpredictable weather conditions set to play a crucial role, it will be essential for the team to get their strategy spot on to secure a top spot on the Formula 1 standings.
