McLaren Boss Refuses to Let Near-Misses in Formula 1 Destroy Team’s Momentum

McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, has emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive outlook despite the team’s recent string of near-misses in Formula 1, including the British Grand Prix. Stella believes that dwelling on these disappointments could hinder the team’s progress and slow its emergence as a force in the sport.

At the British Grand Prix, McLaren’s strategy mistakes allowed Mercedes to snatch victory with Lewis Hamilton, leaving Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to finish behind the winner. Norris expressed his frustration after the race, saying he “hated” missing opportunities to win and making excuses for not doing a good enough job.

However, Stella remains optimistic, focusing on the positives and the team’s growth over the past 12 months. “The near misses are, first of all, a point of view of good news, right?” he said. “We didn’t have these kinds of near misses until 12 months ago, so first of all, we need to look at the positives.”

Stella acknowledges the team’s ability to score points and finish on the podium, emphasizing the importance of building on these strengths rather than getting bogged down by mistakes. By learning from their errors and using them as an opportunity to grow, McLaren can continue to move forward and become a stronger competitor in Formula 1.

“The responsibility for everyone is to keep building,” Stella stressed. “When you have days in which we have a missed opportunity, it is the best opportunity to keep building. We are racing against teams that have won championships and they are pretty stable in terms of the people that are there.”

McLaren will conduct a thorough review of their performance at the British Grand Prix to identify areas for improvement and ensure that similar mistakes are not repeated in the future. By focusing on the positives and using their near-misses as a chance to learn and grow, the team can maintain their momentum and continue to rise through the Formula 1 rankings.
