Zak Brown Eyes IndyCar Dominance with Arrow McLaren, Drawing from Formula 1 Success
IndyCar News: Capitalizing on Formula 1 Momentum
In an exclusive interview with Autosport during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, expressed his confidence in Arrow McLaren IndyCar Series team mirroring the success of its Formula 1 counterpart. The team has been on an upward trajectory, with Pato O’Ward securing two victories and briefly holding second place in the points standings earlier this season.
Brown attributed the Formula 1 team’s recent wins and closing the gap on Red Bull in the constructors’ championship to the “same concept” that can be applied to IndyCar. This involves assembling a top-notch driver lineup, empowering team leadership, and providing necessary resources to excel.
Breaking the IndyCar Duopoly
The IndyCar Series has been dominated by Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing, with the last 11 titles divided between the two teams. Brown’s goal is to break this duopoly, and he believes consistency is the key. Noting the team’s strong performance at the Indy 500, Brown identified bumps as a weakness, particularly at tracks like Toronto and Long Beach.
“The same concept that has worked in Formula 1 can translate to IndyCar success.”

Navigating Challenges and Maintaining Optimism
The recent drama surrounding Alex Palou’s breached agreement and the subsequent driver changes, including the injury to David Malukas, have been a significant distraction for the team. However, Brown is pleased with the current driver lineup, which includes O’Ward, Nolan Siegel, and Christian Lundgaard, who will join the team next year.
IndyCar 2023 has seen its share of ups and downs, but Brown remains optimistic about Arrow McLaren’s potential to challenge for the championship. As the team continues to learn from its mistakes and build on its strengths, Brown is confident that the “same concept” that has worked in Formula 1 can translate to IndyCar success.
