Significant Turnaround After Management Overhaul
McLaren’s technical director, James Key, departed following a dismal start to the 2023 campaign, but the team’s fortunes have changed dramatically since then.
The introduction of an upgraded MCL60 challenger in Austria saw Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri emerge as threats to Red Bull at numerous races, culminating in Piastri’s victory in the Qatar Grand Prix sprint race. This form has carried over into the new term, with Norris securing his maiden Formula 1 victory in Miami and challenging Max Verstappen at Imola and Canada. Piastri also finished second in Monaco, demonstrating the team’s consistency.
Disappointment and Continuous Improvement
Speaking to Autosport, team boss Andrea Stella acknowledged that the team’s disappointment in finishing runner-up at the Canadian Grand Prix, despite leading convincingly before the first safety car intervention, was a testament to their progress.
“This sort of little disappointment for a victory that was possible is actually a testament to the fact that the team has come a long way and we are now regular podium contenders or at times even victory contenders.”
Stella emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, stating that the team needs to make the car faster to be in a position to chase victories independently of track conditions. He also teased upcoming upgrades for the Spanish Grand Prix and beyond, which will feature individual components that provide a performance boost.
Boosted Confidence and Cautious Optimism
McLaren’s recent success is a welcome change after over a decade of struggles, during which they endured a tumultuous period with Honda and a slight improvement with Renault. The team’s current purple patch has boosted confidence within the workforce, which Stella believes will translate to harder work and better results.
However, Stella cautioned that confidence alone is not enough, stressing that it needs to be backed up by high-quality work, robust operations, and consistent driving.
“The confidence element helps in gaining the energy that you need to put behind these success factors… But like I say, you don’t rely on confidence – you will rely on the good work and that’s the kind of mindset that we need to keep at McLaren.”
As the team prepares for the next race in Spain, they remain focused on their mission to continue closing the gap to the top teams and becoming a regular contender for victories. With their current form and upcoming upgrades, McLaren is poised to remain a strong competitor in the Formula 1 standings, providing a thrilling spectacle for fans and cementing their position as a force to be reckoned with in the world of Formula 1 news.
